Police recover rifle during illegal firearm operation in the Pomeroy district

Police recovered an R5 rifle and ammunition after a suspect fled during a firearm operation.

Police recovered an R5 rifle and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation targeting unlicensed firearms at Nkamba Reserve in the Pomeroy area today, May 16.

The operation was conducted with the assistance of the Newcastle Public Order Policing Unit.

Firearm sent for ballistic testing

Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana, SAPS spokesperson, told the Courier that the suspect fled the scene after noticing officers approaching the property.

Police searched the residence and recovered the rifle along with ammunition, which were confiscated for further investigation.

The firearm will now undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it may have been used in the commission of any crimes.

Police investigations are continuing.
