Peacevale residents say sewage overflows, leaking water infrastructure and deteriorating roads are becoming an increasing concern across the uMzinyathi District.

Residents have raised concerns about numerous sewer leaks in the area, with overflowing effluent reportedly finding its way into residential areas, rivers and streams.

People who did not want to be named said numerous complaints had been lodged with the municipality over what they described as poor service delivery.

According to residents, blocked sewer lines have contributed to sewage overflowing into surrounding areas, while illegal dumping of rubble and rubbish is believed to be worsening the problem.

They warned that sewage entering rivers and streams could pose environmental and health risks to people and animals.

Water leaks add to concerns

Residents have also raised concerns about leaking water meters and damaged water pipes across the district.

They said water is sometimes left running down roads for days before municipal teams attend to the leaks, resulting in what they described as significant water wastage.

Deteriorating road conditions are another major concern.

Hajee Jamal Street, the main thoroughfare through Peacevale, has reportedly deteriorated to the point where it is now a gravel road.

Residents say the road was left in this condition after a contractor allegedly disappeared following the awarding of a multi-million-rand tender.

There has been no direct response from the municipality to the concerns raised by residents.

However, Councillor Zitha Shelembe previously said councillors play no role in the awarding of tenders, as this is an administrative matter.
