Suspects in Burma Road murder case appear in court

All three suspects will remain in custody until their next court appearance.

Three suspects arrested in connection with a body found at a property in Burma Road, Leonardsville, appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court this morning (November 2). The suspects face murder charges.

Body found in shallow grave

The discovery came after a person was reported missing on Wednesday, October 21, with police issuing an appeal to the public for help in locating the then missing person on Tuesday, October 27.

The body was found buried in a shallow grave on Wednesday, October 28.

Police then cordoned off the scene as investigations got underway.

Despite persistent rumours that more bodies had been buried in the yard, all three suspects have only been charged with a single count of murder.

Suspects allegedly work for unregistered security company

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo, “The suspects are employees of a private security company which, upon investigation, was found to be operating without registering with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).”

Suspects remain in custody

The suspects initially appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 30, and returned to court today.

The matter has now been postponed to Friday (November 6) for the court to consider requests submitted by the lawyer representing Accused Number 1. All three suspects will remain in custody until their next court appearance.

A date for an official bail application is expected to be determined after the November 6 proceedings.

Police investigations into the matter continue.
