Multiple charges against man that hijacked ambulance

The man that hijacked a Midlands EMS ambulance on Monday (July 3) has been charged and appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old man hijacked the ambulance vehicle near Lions River while paramedics were attending to a crash scene that he was involved in.

He allegedly held paramedics at gunpoint before fleeing in the emergency vehicle.

A high speed chase ensued, with the man crashing into two other vehicles while fleeing. The chase came to an end when he crashed into a third vehicle on the N3 near Ultra City.

The man was swiftly arrested by law enforcement officers that were on the lookout.

When appearing in court in Estcourt on Tuesday, the man faced multiple charges.

“He stood accused of drunken driving, reckless and negligent driving and being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition,” explained police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.

However, that is not where it ends.

“The suspect will have to answer to more charges that will emanate from the incidents that took place in the Howick area,” added Khan.
