Three suspects nabbed for CBD business robbery

Three business robbers quickly found themselves on the wrong side of the law yesterday, October 10, after robbing a chain store in the Newcastle central business district.

Mornè Potgieter, head of operations at Ithemba Security, said a tip-off had been received about an armed robbery in progress.

“Upon arrival, our unit quickly pinned down one of the robbers while the others fled the scene. Intelligence was immediately gathered which led the teams to share vital information with neighbouring towns,” he explained.

A white Toyota Corolla, used in the robbery as a getaway vehicle, was stopped in Vrede, Free State, by the SAPS, Ballid Security and farmers, where a second suspect was arrested and the vehicle seized.

Members of the SAPS KZN CI team and Ithemba Security tracing team gathered further intelligence that was shared with units in Gauteng, leading to the arrest of a third suspect, and the recovery of a Toyota Avanza also involved in the robbery.

“Members are currently on the ground, locating outstanding suspects, and more arrests are imminent.

“We thank all the dedicated members for achieving this success and making it known to criminals that Newcastle is a no-crime zone,” concluded Potgieter.

Units involved: Ithemba Specialised Intervention Unit, Ithemba Tracing Team, Ithemba Guarding Division, THE Foshini Group, Ballid Security, Newcastle SAPS and Detectives Unit, SAPS KZN CI, Newcastle K9 Unit, SAPS Vrede, Memel, and Vrede Farmers, Gauteng Highway Patrol, JMPD IOC, and various security companies.
