Newcastle law enforcement put 343 suspects behind bars

A total of 434 suspects were apprehended and arrested after being charged with various crimes ranging from petty theft to attempted murder.

In their on-going endeavours to eradicate the scourge of crime in Newcastle, the SAPS, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, social partners, and security companies in May arrested 343 suspects.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, said those arrested were held for the following offences:

  • Attempted murder,
  • Business burglary,
  • Housebreaking (residential and business),
  • Theft of motor vehicles,
  • Common assault,
  • Sexual assault,
  • Contravention of protection order,
  • Theft,
  • Fraud,
  • Possession of unlicensed firearms,
  • Robbery,
  • Common robbery,
  • Robbery with a weapon,
  • Possession of suspected stolen property,
  • Shoplifting,
  • Drunk driving,
  • Possession of heroin,
  • Possession of Mandrax,
  • Possession of drugs.

Brigadier Vassie Naidoo,  Newcastle SAPS Station Commander, said he appreciated the members’ dedicated efforts in arresting outstanding wanted suspects.

He further encouraged the community to continue working in partnership with the local SAPS.

“I encourage the community to provide any information concerning any illegal activities in our policing precinct,” he concluded.
