DA activist killed in taxi rank shooting

According to the family, the deceased will be laid to rest on Sunday.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the uThukela District has expressed their sadness and anger following the murder of party member and activist Bongani Andries Sibisi in Estcourt. He was shot and killed at the Estcourt taxi rank on Wednesday evening (April 24).

The DA said it expects swift action by the police to ensure that justice is served.

DA Member of Parliament Alf Lees issued the following statement, ‘’Crime! The nemesis of society!  Typically, it impacts the daily lives of the poor and vulnerable. A gentle, caring man who was focused on changing our lives in society for the better had his life snuffed out. A family lost someone they were proud of – someone who believed and had hope that South Africa could do better. Sadly, the government is just not getting on top of crime.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed the incident and said, ”A 46-year-old man was fatally injured in a shooting that took place in the Estcourt taxi rank on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased sustained several gunshot wounds; the motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. The deceased has since been identified as Bongani Andries Sibisi.”

Spokesperson for the family of the deceased, Samantha Sibisi, said this incident had nothing to do with politics. ‘’My brother was with two other people and they bumped into someone who is allegedly a taxi boss. One of the people who was with my brother got into an argument with the alleged taxi boss and they ended up pointing guns at each other. When my brother tried to intervene, he got shot,” she said.
