Security officers attacked, 1 killed

Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

A tragic shooting took place in the Beacon Hill area on Thursday last week (March 20), resulting in the death of a security officer. It is alleged that two security officers were ambushed by unknown attackers while on foot patrol near the railway line along Lowlands Road.

According to reports, one officer (in his late 30s) sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene. His colleague was wounded but managed to escape and call for help. The colleague was rushed to hospital and is currently in a stable condition.

It is alleged that the suspects fled the scene in a white bakkie.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed the incident, saying that on Thursday evening last week, two security officers were attacked while on duty.

“It is alleged that they disturbed a group who were in the process of interfering with essential infrastructure. Mthandeni Erick Nkwanyana (39) suffered fatal injuries and his partner received medical attention. Estcourt detectives are investigating a case of murder as well as attempted murder,” Khan explained.
