Shute shooter appears in Ladysmith court today

He will be applying for bail.

Ladysmith KZN: Martin Wessels, the 43-year-old man accused of shooting Anton Lombard, is set to appear in court today (May 8) for a formal bail application.

Wessels has been in police custody since the shooting on April 16, having made his first court appearance on April 17.

Following a change in legal representation, Wessels’ new attorney was appointed after his previous attorney withdrew from the case. The court proceedings will continue today with the bail application, as the court considers whether to grant Wessels bail pending the outcome of the trial.

The shooting took place at the Hauser Park Sports Bar, better known as The Shute. When police arrived at the scene, Wessels handed himself over; and a firearm belonging to him was removed from his bakkie, which was parked a short distance from where Lombard lay dead.
