uThukela unveils new fleet to speed up service delivery

The district municipality has acquired five bakkies and two sedans.

In a bid to improve service delivery, uThukela unveiled its new fleet of vehicles today (May 7).

The municipality has acquired five bakkies and two sedans for its service delivery departments.

The bakkies will be allocated to the Water, Sanitation & Technical Services department to attend to water- and sanitation-related activities, while the other vehicles will be allocated to the Finance department to assist with meter readings and revenue collection.

During the unveiling, uThukela Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala explained that these vehicles come after the municipality conducted an overhaul of its fleet last year. The purpose was to replace redundant old vehicles and strengthen the capacity of the current fleet. He said the municipality auctioned off its old fleet and used the money to buy new ones, which included seven water tankers that were purchased last year. The mayor also warned against the misuse of these vehicles, as he said consequence management would be applied.

“The acquisition of the new fleet demonstrates uThukela District Council’s commitment to improving service delivery, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring that our teams are equipped to do their jobs effectively. It will be remembered that last year we auctioned off the old fleet, so we are using that money to purchase a new one. These new vehicles come after we also bought seven water tankers last year. We hope this will help the municipality in its efforts to speed up service delivery. We urge our drivers to take care of these vehicles,” said the mayor.
