Court sentences 70-year-old rapist to life in prison

The second time he raped the girl, another child looked through the window and saw what was happening.

The Estcourt Regional Court has sentenced a 70-year-old man to life imprisonment for rape.

He was accused of raping a 12-year-old girl on two occasions in the Phangweni area in 2022. The man was a family friend and was known by the victim.

Natasha Ramkisson-Kara from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) explained that, on both occasions, this sexual predator used the same method to rape the victim. The first time, he asked the victim’s grandmother if the girl could help him with something at his house. She arrived with other children, but the 70-year-old sent the other children out to look for something outside or pick fruit from the trees. He remained behind with the girl and molested her.

In the second incident, he used the same method. However, while he was busy raping the girl, another child peeked through the window and saw what was happening. This led to the victim’s grandmother hearing the story, and the man was arrested.

He was found guilty and will now spend the rest of his life behind bars for his heinous crimes.
