Colita bridge officially handed over to the community
The damaged bridge made it extremely difficult for residents, including workers and schoolchildren, to cross safely.
After years of waiting, reconstruction of the Colita bridge is finally complete. The bridge was officially handed over to the community today (July 29) by Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Mayor Mduduzi Myeza. Also present at the handover ceremony were Ward 10 Councillor Edith Lite, Deputy Mayor S Dladla, Speaker SW Khumalo and several other councillors.
The bridge was destroyed by heavy rains several years ago. The sod-turning ceremony to herald its reconstruction was held on June 6, 2024.
Speaking during today’s handover, Mayor Myeza expressed relief and gratitude that the project has finally been completed, despite minor challenges along the way.
“We are happy that the time has finally come to officially hand over the bridge to the community. From now on, people will be able to cross safely, especially our schoolchildren. When the bridge was damaged, it was very hard for both vehicles and pedestrians to cross. It even reached a point where vehicles couldn’t pass at all. This posed serious safety risks, particularly to children, who are often tempted to play in dangerous areas. That’s why we made it a priority to fix the bridge,” said Myeza.

The mayor also took the opportunity to thank the councillors for their co-operation, emphasising the importance of unity in service delivery.
“Service delivery becomes more effective when councillors work hand-in-hand,” he noted, further encouraging them to continue working together for the benefit of their communities.
