The Madadeni Regional Court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to two life terms and eight years behind bars for repeatedly raping two sisters and robbing them in their Osizweni home in September 2023.
The victims were aged 12 and 23 at the time of the attack.
The older sister cared for her own children as well as her siblings when the attacker broke down their door on the night of September 10.
He demanded a cellphone, threatened her with a knife, and then raped her repeatedly.
He then turned on the younger complainant, also raping her more than once before fleeing.
The traumatised sisters raised the alarm with neighbours, who spotted the accused walking up and down on the street outside their home.
Police were called and arrested him on the spot.
The complainants received medical care and psychosocial support at the Madadeni Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC). DNA evidence, medical reports, and testimony from community members secured the conviction.
In court, the sisters described the deep trauma caused by the attack. Their aunt told the court she had to relocate them to another province for safety.
Prosecutor Khethiwe Kunene argued for a harsh sentence, submitting Victim Impact Statements.
The court handed down two life sentences for rape, three years for housebreaking, and five years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), welcomed the outcome, saying it underscores the fight against gender-based violence.
“The growing network of Thuthuzela Care Centres — now 66 nationwide — continues to play a vital role in supporting victims of sexual violence,” Ramkisson-Kara said.
