Watch: Night raid nets illegal workers and factory boss

Officials arrested over 20 undocumented workers during the blitz.

A high-impact overnight operation led to the arrest of more than 20 undocumented workers and their employer at a textile factory in Newcastle’s Riverside Industrial area.

The operation was conducted on the evening of June 4 and was led by Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour, Jomo Sibiya. It was also attended by Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Njabulo Nzuza, and Deputy Minister of Police, Dr Polly Boshielo.

Officials from the South African Police Service, Department of Employment and Labour, and Department of Home Affairs also took part.

Multiple violations uncovered

The co-ordinated blitz resulted in more than 20 undocumented workers from Malawi, Eswatini and Lesotho being apprehended.

Authorities also arrested the factory owner, a Chinese national, for alleged contraventions of several labour regulations.

Employer arrested

According to officials, the employer is facing charges related to non-compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and Unemployment Insurance Fund regulations.
