The Steadville Secondary School teacher who is accused of raping a learner made his second court appearance today (September 22). The 50-year-old man made his first appearance in court last week Tuesday (September 15) and was remanded back into custody.

Learner allegedly raped near Ladysmith Motel

It is alleged that on Friday, September 11, a number of learners were offered a lift home by a teacher and the alleged victim was the last one in the vehicle.

It is further alleged that the learner was raped near Ladysmith Motel.

The matter was later reported to the police and a suspect was arrested.

According to SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, the case is being investigated by the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

Community members and victim’s family pack the courtroom

The court was fully packed today by Steadville community members and the complainant’s family, all of whom did not want the accused to be let out on bail.

Outside the courthouse, ANC supporters staged a protest, urging justice for the victim.

The court postponed the matter until tomorrow (September 23) to allow for further investigation.
