MEC Sithole-Moloi said these awards seek to commend outstanding performances and promoting a culture of excellence within municipalities

Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality was one of the municipalities that was celebrated at the Municipality Excellence Awards. The ceremony was held by the Department of Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs (Cogta) at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Tuesday evening (February 13).

Addressing the packed PMB City Hall, Cogta MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi said they are celebrating commendable efforts made by municipalities to enhance the quality of life for citizens, saying it is very important to recognise the work of municipalities and institutions of traditional leadership. “Municipalities are responsible for implementing projects, big or small, that directly impact our communities,” said Sithole-Moloi.

Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality took the award for second best municipality in the ‘Best Managed Electricity Project’ category, with first position taken by Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zama Local Municipality.

The silver trophy and certificate were received by Mayor Mduduzi Myeza, accompanied by Municipal Manager SB Mthembu. In a statement, the municipality said that despite having had major setbacks and derailing encounters in the Weenen electrification project, where over 752 poles burned beyond recognition with an estimated cost of over R1.1 million, the municipality was resilient, overcame these setbacks, and gave to the people what belongs to the people.

The municipality continued by saying, “Such an achievement would not have been possible had it not been for our council that is forever on the ground, our dedicated staff, and all our stakeholders. We remain forever indebted to each and every one of you. We are grateful to the department for recognising our commitment and efforts.”
