Alfred Duma Local Municipality has strongly condemned a series of incidents in which tuck shops have allegedly been targeted and set alight in parts of Ezakheni.

According to a statement issued by the municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Zama Sibisi, incidents have been reported in the Ezakheni KwaMthanti area at the Crossing Rank, while containers near the railway bridge were also allegedly set on fire.

The municipality further confirmed that there were reported attempts to loot businesses in Ezakheni sections C2 and A. However, these attempts were unsuccessful.

Criminal acts will not be tolerated

The municipality described the burning of tuck shops, looting and vandalism as reckless, unlawful and destructive acts, stressing that such behaviour constitutes criminal offences.
Law enforcement agencies have been alerted and authorities have warned that anyone found to be involved will face the consequences.

“The municipality wishes to make it unequivocally clear that individuals who participate in these acts may face the full consequences of the law,” the statement read.

Call for calm

Residents have been urged to remain calm, exercise restraint and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The municipality appeals to communities to work together to maintain peace, stability and respect for the rule of law while avoiding any form of vandalism, destruction of property or criminal behaviour.

Report suspicious activity

Community members are encouraged to report incidents of vandalism, looting, arson or any suspicious activity to the municipality’s 24-hour emergency line on 036 637 2231.

Officials said community co-operation is essential in helping law enforcement authorities prevent further criminal acts and bring those responsible to justice.

Support for local businesses

The municipality also encouraged residents operating businesses or tuck shops to formally register them and ensure they are included on the municipal database.

According to the municipality, registered businesses will be better positioned to access future support programmes and economic development opportunities offered by the municipality and its partners.

Alfred Duma Local Municipality reiterated its commitment to protecting communities, supporting lawful business activities and creating an environment that promotes sustainable local economic growth and development.
