Local football stars played ‘street soccer’ in Ntabeni Street this past weekend as part of a ‘seven-a-side’ tournament.
A total of four teams played, with the top two teams being Emgodini Football Club (FC) and Newcastle Football Club.
It was a battle for the crown as the two sides vied for victory in the scorching sun on Saturday afternoon.
The game was watched by a large group of spectators who loudly blew their vuvuzelas every time the ball hit the back of the net.
In a high-scoring game, Emgodini FC narrowly won by six goals to five, making them the day’s champions.
“We hope to have more street matches against other towns, as these games bring the community together,” said one of the appreciative soccer fans after the tournament.
Emgodini club owner Thulani Lekgau congratulated his team on their victory.
“Our team was formed very recently, so I am amazed at how well they played their first two matches, winning both games against experienced opposition,” explained Lekgau.
He concluded by saying that his team is sure to go from strength to strength in the near future, judging by this success.
