Armed robbers hit businesses in town

Seeing the police, the suspects ran off in different directions

Last week seemed like ‘open season’ for criminals when two businesses in town were robbed by armed thugs. On Monday (September 19), a furniture store in Kerk Street was robbed at gunpoint. A few days later, a well-known clothing store next to the Bloemnel Centre in Hoog Street was also hit by gun-wielding robbers. It is alleged that an employee was standing at the door when she was approached by a man pretending to be a customer. She led him into the shop, where he pulled out a gun and held it to her waist. They walked to the till points and that’s when she noticed another man with a gun. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and demanded cellphones. However, they were told that the person who had the key for the cellphones was not around. The suspects then left the store with their loot. Police responded quickly and when they arrived, they found the suspects still standing at the door to the store. Seeing the police, the suspects ran off in different directions. Police were immediately in pursuit on foot and managed to arrest them all. It is unclear at this stage if the two cases are related.
