Lize Smith and Wendy Moore took part in the Memel Walk last Saturday (Heritage Day) to raise breast cancer awareness.
When the Lions Club heard that Lize and Wendy were going to participate, it turned into a fun awareness event that doubled as a fund-raiser.
The Lions Club is an NGO and women-only organisation that loves getting involved in fund-raising / community projects, with their motto being ‘We Serve’.
With only four kilometres to go in the Memel Walk, the first issues were encountered when Wendy tore her hamstring.
However, she was determined to finish. Wendy struggled along and when they got to the Newcastle entrance, she needed strapping tape from paramedics to secure her leg and prevent further damage.
It was then Lize’s turn to experience difficulties.
“When we stopped, I stopped and my body decided no more.”
Lize fainted and that was the end of her walk.
Wendy endured the pain and managed the last 4km, getting to the finish line at the Pines.
