Members of the executive committee (exco) are as follows: chairperson – Morris Gajoo, vice-chairperson – SM Singh, secretary – Nad Gounden, assistant secretary – Neera Gooney, internal auditor – SS Maharaj, safety and security – Bheki Zikalala, luncheon club treasurer – K Gurlal, infrastructure treasurer – Viren Singh, luncheon club PRO – RD Maharaj, infrastructure PRO – Nisha Ramraj, and honourary member – Persman Persad (Aunty Barbie).

Many changes have come as a result of the Nofta annual general meeting (AGM).

A new team has been elected to lead the Newcastle Organisation for the Aged (Nofta), with sustainability being the biggest challenge facing this new team.

As much as our motto is ‘we do it for ourselves’, the frailty of our group is underscored by the fact that more than half of our membership is made up of the elderly who are 65 years and older, with a significant number over the age of 75 and some reaching 90 and beyond,” said vice-chairperson SM Singh.The inescapable reality is that all of the almost 200 members are in the last quarter of their lives. The new committee plans to make it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for these members.”

Singh said the Nofta exco was presently developing strategies to expand on the contribution of the Department of Social Development, as well as bringing the organisation closer to the community through organised events.
