Thieves break into crisis centre
The crisis centre is a place of refuge for many women seeking shelter from abuse but this has not prevented criminals from breaking to the centre.
The centre was broken into last Wednesday evening with the intruders making off with an R2500 carpet donated by TCC CHEMICALS.
“What could anyone possible want from a place of safety?” wondered crisis centre manager, Mary Dobbie.
She explained that the morning after, staff noticed that a section of the palisade fence had been broken off, implying that the thieves were able to slide under the electrified portion of the fence. Staff then realised that the rug had vanished and that the electric tampered with.
Mary believes this is the work of local drug users known as ‘pharas’ in the area.
“What’s happening is that the theft is a result of poverty, but I’m so disappointed because when the ‘pharas’ come around, we feed them,” a frustrated Dobbie said.
“It’s not even about the rug, it’s about the principal,” she concluded. “We provide a service to the residents of Newcastle. It is critical that the victims who seek refuge here feel safe. What could they possibly expect to find here?”
