Myeni family finally lays Snegugu to rest

Paying tribute to Snegugu at her funeral, loved ones painted a picture of a loving and caring soul who went abroad to study.

Snegugu Myeni (31) was laid to rest at the Bergsig Sports grounds in Utrecht on Saturday (July 29).

The final masters of psychology student passed away suddenly on July 10 at a Philippines airport while waiting to board an aeroplane that would have taken her home.

Her story made national headlines after her mother requested help with the repatriation of her body to South Africa for burial.

Snegugu’s remains were returned to the country on July 27 through the coordinated efforts of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, Emadlangeni Municipality, the Department of International relations, Icebolethu funerals and various other players.

In attendance was the Mayor of Emadlangeni Municipality, ML Buthelezi, KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube and other dignitaries.

“She was a gift to South Africa, Emadlangeni, her congregation, and the nation,” commented Premier, Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

“Thank you to the minister of the Department of International relations and his whole department for assisting us as the repatriation process is a long and complicated process,” she further went on.

Snegugu is survived by her four-year-old daughter and her bereaved mother, who was unable to speak but nominated a spokesperson who read a letter expressing her feelings.

“I promise to raise your child with the love of the Lord and the love of a parent, just as I raised you. My hero, I adore you. I will never forget your beauty or how much you cared about yourself. Rest easy my child. I will remember and miss you forever. If the Lord allows it, we will see each other in the afterlife.”

Emadlangeni mayor ML Buthelezi pleaded with the Emadlangeni community to support the family after the funeral and to ensure that Snegugu’s legacy lives on.
