‘Mother of Culture’ plants trees for her birthday

She celebrated her 'big day' by honouring a late cousin

“Another year older and another year wiser,” says ‘Mother Of Culture’ Vegentie Makka Achambit, who celebrated her birthday on December 6.

She says she always felt very different from other children when growing up. When it was her birthday and her parents asked what gift she would like to receive, she would always say she wanted to do something special for the community instead of herself. That sentiment has carried on into her adult years, earning her the name ‘Mother of Culture’.

“Believe me, I always find relief in my heart and feel blessed by doing something special for someone else. Every year on my birthday, I will always make my way through to the blood bank to donate. I believe that if I can save lives, why not. I am blessed to be an O-positive donor, so my blood is compatible with everyone,” said Achambit.

For this year’s birthday, she decided to do something different by visiting a temple, mosque and church to plant trees in memory of her late cousin, who was like a brother to her. He loved nature and appreciated every plant. “I was honoured to receive blessings from all the religious centres – the president of the temple, the moulana of the mosque and the pastor of the church. I believe that although planting trees is not a new concept, it is significant on a birthday. By planting a tree, you nourish new life.

“It is said that one large tree can provide a day’s supply of oxygen for up to four people. Trees also store carbon dioxide in their fibres, helping to clean the air and reduce the negative effects that this could have had on our environment.

“Life has given me many challenges but I’m not one to give up, because I trust and have faith that I will grow stronger by the day with the blessings of the Lord. Love all, serve all. Every little bit you do continues to count. I would like to thank my husband and my family for their love and support, and for always standing by my side.

“A very special thank you to my family and friends for all the birthday wishes, and a huge thank you to the Ladysmith Gazette,” smiled Achambit.
