Concerns about blocked sewer

“It blocks all the time and this has been going on for years now.''

A concerned resident has raised the issue of a sewer drain that blocks almost every month.
Mr Ben, who lives in Boeren Street, says the sewer drain at the corner of Landrost and Boeren Street has been an ‘ongoing crisis’. “It blocks all the time and this has been going on for years now. Every time it blocks, employees from the municipality fix it, but after a few weeks, it just blocks again. I feel it is a waste of labour and resources.”
When the sewer again blocked on Monday, Mr Ben contacted the Vryheid Herald. A journalist went out to the scene and found municipal workers trying to unclog the drain. The workers mentioned that they have been fixing the same sewer for some time now. Mr Ben and the workers allege that what blocks the drain is fat that comes from a franchise that sells fried chicken. “I have tried several times to get the municipality to assist us with this issue and, yes, they do fix it, but we need a permanent solution to this,” fumed Mr Ben.
Councillor Elaine Rodway commented that she is going to check with the directors to see if they can send someone to inspect the drain, as this is the first time she’s heard of the problem. “I want to make sure of the correct procedure, but I will definitely follow up.”
The matter was reported to the regional manager of the franchise, who has undertaken to deal with the matter immediately.
