Local beauty crowned Face of KZN

Newcastle’s vibrant spirit was on full display when Mpilo Sibiya (26) emerged victorious at the 11th Face of KZN Model Search Contest.

The event, held recently in Pietermaritzburg, attracted talented contestants from across KwaZulu-Natal, but it was Mpilo’s grace and determination that ultimately won her the crown, bringing pride to her hometown.

In an exclusive interview with the Newcastle Advertiser, Mpilo reflected on her journey, which began in a warm and nurturing home with her grandmother. She attended Simanganyawo Primary School and Muzokhanyayo Secondary School, but it wasn’t until high school that she discovered her passion for modelling.

“My journey into modelling was not an easy one,” she admitted. “I struggled with confidence due to bullying and hurtful comments about my family background. It made me doubt whether I could pursue a career in pageantry.”

Mpilo discovered the competition through Facebook and was immediately attracted to its inclusive approach.

“I was determined to be part of something that does not only recognise physical beauty which emphasises not only physical beauty but also leadership qualities and community service,” she explained.

Although financial constraints forced her to withdraw from the contest in the previous two years, her resolve remained unshaken.

“With the support of my family and friends, we worked tirelessly to raise the necessary funds, and it has paid off. I am now proud to represent the vibrant province of KZN.”

The Face of KZN Model Search judges contestants on various criteria, including runway skills, photogenic appeal, and overall charisma. The event aims to provide emerging models with a platform to launch their careers in the fashion industry. Bengs Nkosi, the founder of the model search, praised her talent and spirit.

“Mpilo Sibiya is a sizzling young lady who embodies passion and intelligence. She is brave and truly stands out on stage,” he said.

As she revels in her recent success, Mpilo is also focusing on giving back to her community. In her free time, she mentors aspiring models, sharing the knowledge she has gained throughout her journey.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my legacy will live on through the success of those I’ve helped shape,” she noted.

To the youth aspiring to enter the modelling industry, Mpiloh offers valuable advice: “Be fearless in the spotlight, work on your communication skills, and be resilient, especially under pressure. Accept yourself, celebrate your uniqueness, and build connections within the industry.”
