Newcastle social organisations kick off 16 days of activism against GBV.
The march organised by Child Welfare, in partnership with the Department of Social Development, Newcastle Crisis Centre, SAPS, and other organisations, aimed to raise awareness about the plague of violence in the Amajuba district.
Newcastle advocacy organisations turned out in solidarity when the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence kicked off on Monday (November 25)
The march, which began on Patterson Street, made its way down Sutherland Street and culminated at the taxi rank where various speakers raised awareness about the prevalence of gender-based violence.
The march, which served as the launch for the 16 Days of Activism campaign in Newcastle, was attended by women and men from all walks of life, united by a shared goal to raise awareness and demand an end to GBV.
Welcoming the participants, Morris Gajoo of Child Welfare explained the importance of standing up and fighting for the rights of the vulnerable in our communities.
Those who marched chanted and held banners that read “stop gender-based violence,” “give violence against women a red card,” and “unite against GBV.”
The march concluded with a collective call for the community to stand together against GBV and continue the struggle for justice and equality. Participants left with a renewed feeling of purpose, knowing that their voices, along with many others, will help to create a safer, more just future for all women and children.
Child Welfare head Faried Mia, thanked the various businesses that stepped up and came on board to support. “Thank you to Ahmed Ameen for the water, Yacoob Moolla who donated the fabric for the banner, Jan Van Rensburg from Magenta for providing ambulance and security services and all the stakeholders who came out to raise their voices about the scourge of GBV.”
