‘Week of the Aged’ marked in glamorous style as Nofta hosts an evening to behold
"Age is not just a number but a badge of honour," said chairperson of the Newcastle Organisation for the Aged (Nofta), Morris Gajoo, in his opening remarks at a grand celebration marking the 'Week of the Aged'.
The organisation honoured the contributions the elderly have made to society at a glamorous event hosted on November 16, where members were treated to live entertainment and a five-course dinner
Guest speaker at the event, Reena Maharaj, described growing older as a privilege filled with wisdom, milestones and stories shared with the younger generation, thereby enriching their lives.
“The elderly in our community are a living link to the extraordinary events they have lived through,” said Maharaj, who added that people should not become invisible as they get older.
Maharaj urged members of the community to consider ways in which they may make the lives of the elderly more comfortable and help them overcome the sense of loneliness and isolation associated with ageing.
The formalities of the evening were concluded with the acknowledgement of the hard work put in by Nofta’s executive and working committee towards caring for the elderly.
The contributions made by lifetime, honorary member of Nofta, Bully Singh, were honoured and there was also a word of gratitude for the main sponsor of the event, Asim Gani.
