Christmas spirit at Newcastle’s original market

Everyone left with something helping to spark the spirit of giving for the Christmas season.

The charm of handmade goods and the scent of sizzling meat provided the perfect backdrop for Newcastle’s original Christmas Market on Saturday (November 30).

The grounds of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation were bustling with stalls and visitors who came to support the event and enjoy the festivities, with proceeds of the market day aimed at benefiting St. Martin’s Village.

Children had fun at the petting zoo, enjoying the horse rides, face painting, and even had the opportunity to enjoy a tractor ride around the grounds. The stalls offered a variety of goods, from books by the Newcastle Lions Club to homemade Christmas-themed decorations from St. Martin’s Village.

Pastor Thomas Beneke shared that the event aimed to raise awareness about the congregation within the Newcastle community, allow the church to collaborate, and raise funds for both St. Martin’s and the church building.

“We thank God for this wonderful event and the entire community that came together to support us,” he said.

The church opened its kindergarten in 2020 and is preparing to launch a grade one class. Irma Nel, the principal of St. Martin’s Kindergarten, and the pastor’s wife Liesel Beneke, expressed excitement about the school’s growth. “Our school is wonderfully unique because it offers a Christian, family-oriented environment with individual attention and an additional focus on farming,” said Nel.

“We’re excited for the new challenge and the adventure ahead,” added Beneke.
