Ladysmith residents march against illegal immigrants

Illegal foreign nationals are accused of being involved in criminal activities in town.

Residents of Ladysmith, mostly young people, took part in the ‘March and March until we Win’ peaceful protest today (May 2).

The aim was to air their dissatisfaction concerning the increasing number of illegal immigrants in town.

The protest started at the Astron garage in Murchison Street and ended at the Town Hall.

Their demands included that government should deport all illegal immigrants; government must work on a system to control the heavy influx of foreigners; and the authorities must conduct raids regularly in town, especially on businesses owned by foreign nationals.

The SAPS, Alfred Duma Local Municipality and Home Affairs officials received the memorandum.

The protesters gave the authorities a period of 14 days to respond to their grievances and vowed to march again should their demands not be met.
