Deceased woman found in abandoned field shelter

A woman was found deceased early this morning in an abandoned structure in the open field across from the Sasol filling station on Hardwick Street.

According to officials at the scene, two men walking through the field discovered the woman lying motionless in the shelter  last night. Concerned for her wellbeing, they flagged down a passing motorist and asked them to alert the police. The motorist, however, did not report the incident.

When the men returned to the scene this morning and saw the woman in the same position, they approached a nearby security vehicle, whose personnel then contacted law enforcement.

The abandoned structure the woman lived in and was found deceased in.

Authorities say the woman had some medication, a SASSA card, and documents bearing the name “Neli.” However, no official identification including a surname was found. She is believed to have been in her late 30s to early 40s and appeared severely malnourished.

Police have opened an inquest docket to investigate the cause of death.

Anyone who may have information about the woman or her family is urged to contact the Newcastle police station.
