“Remember that hope is a powerful weapon even when all else is lost.” – Nelson Mandela.
Future Coal embraced the spirit of this message by instilling hope in communities surrounding the mine during this year’s Mandela Day celebrations.
Despite the challenges faced by the business, the team remained committed to honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela through acts of kindness and support.
As HR Manager Keo Mashabe put it, “There is no greater pleasure than giving, especially when you do so cheerfully.”
The day began at home, with the Women in Mining (WIM) team, led by Keo and her colleagues, preparing and serving warm soup to all staff, from workers right up to CEO, Mr Malcolm Pryde.
The appreciation and delight from employees was deeply moving.
Later in the day, Keo was joined by General Manager Rob Pryde, SLP consultant Barbara Elliot, Community Forum Chairperson Sphiwe Ndlovu, and forum members Zama Mvilane and Sphelele Khumalo as they travelled to nearby villages.
There, they distributed food parcels, clothes, blankets, and soccer balls to children.
The dire conditions in which many community members live were described as heartbreaking, making each gesture of kindness all the more impactful.
Future Coal’s community commitment goes beyond Mandela Day.
The mine currently offers yellow machine training, equipping locals with accredited certification to improve their chances of employment. It also supports an agricultural project, Farming God’s Way, which trains individuals to grow their own gardens.
Once training is complete, participants receive a starter pack to help them launch their own home gardens.Keo proudly added, “Future Coal is truly a mine we can be proud of.
“Whether big or small, every effort makes a difference. Our CEO, Mr Pryde, alongside our directors and shareholders, lives by the belief that ‘Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu’. I am proud to be part of this team.”
