Newcastle’s much-maligned landfill site was inspected by the KZN Legislature last week where the team did an oversight of operational activities.
According to the municipality’s communications department, the visit aimed to assess the municipality’s progress in addressing previous concerns and to identify areas needing improvement, ensuring compliance with environmental and health regulations.
During the visit, the legislative team carried out a comprehensive site inspection, engaging with the municipal delegation led by Council Speaker, Cllr TM Zulu, alongside Municipal Manager, Zamani Mcineka and other stakeholders.
“Together, they reviewed progress, discussed challenges, and provided guidance. The inspection found that while some progress has been made in resolving non-compliance issues, persistent challenges remain,” said the municipality said in a statement.
These issues included, uncovered waste, machinery breakdowns, and the urgent need for specialised landfill fire fighting equipment.
The KZN Legislature concluded their site visit by highlighting priority areas for improvement and emphasising the importance of implementing sustainable measures to ensure long-term compliance with environmental and health regulations.
