Mrizo Mashaba blends Maskandi and Gospel to inspire fans

Master “Mrizo” Mashaba is a versatile artist from Dannhauser in the Amajuba District, KwaZulu-Natal.
Born on 20 February 1992, he began developing his musical talent at the age of seven, guided by his father, who also taught him to play various instruments and the skill of bricklaying.
In 2024, Mrizo joined Newcastle Community Radio Station as the presenter of Eyakithi Lengoma, a Maskandi show that airs every Saturday from 12:00 to 15:00.
The show reflects his deep passion for and connection to African music.
With more than a decade in the music industry, Mrizo has established himself as a sought-after performer, gracing both corporate events and major festivals.
His distinctive sound blends Maskandi and Afro-pop, appealing to a wide audience that also includes Gospel music lovers.
Mrizo’s popularity grew after being discovered by renowned producer Steve Raphadu, which led to his victory at the Gumba Fest competition.
Collaborations with artists such as DJ Tira, Prince Bulo, Spirit Banger, DJ Kilimanjaro and Duncan produced the hit single Ikhaya Lengoma.
In 2016, Mrizo appeared on SABC 1’s Mikasi Sukasi, and in 2017 he worked with Mono T on the Move On EP.
His 2019 album, produced by Steve Raphadu, featured artists including Zulu Mkhathini.
Inspired by icons such as Ihhashi Elimhlophe, Chico Twala, Jabu Khanyile, Bhekumuzi Luthuli and Umanji, Mrizo continues to expand his musical horizons.
He is currently working with Gospel legend Richard Masemola, who serves as his producer and manager.
Mrizo has been nominated for a South African Gospel Recognition Award (SAGRA) in the category of Best Gqom/Amapiano Project.
The awards ceremony will be held in East London on November 15.
