Sun halo has residents looking skyward

Bright, white ring around the sun - but don't look at it for too long or it will damage your eyes.

Local residents had the opportunity to see a rather rare phenomenon this morning (November 27): a halo around the sun.

According to information from the South African Weather Service website, a halo is a ring of light that forms around the sun or moon as light refracts off ice crystals present in a thin veil of cirrus clouds. “The halo is usually seen as a bright, white ring, although it sometimes displays colour.”

The photos seen here were taken at about 11:30.
