A Newcastle taxi driver is facing charges of drunken driving after attempting to flee on foot during a Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) operation over the weekend.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed the arrest, stating: “Ama RTI amahle abuye naye,” adding that no one can evade the RTI during the ongoing #NenzaniLaEzweni operation.

“By 18:00 on Saturday, RTI officers had already arrested 29 motorists, including the taxi driver, all facing drunk driving charges,” said MEC Duma.

The taxi driver attempted to escape but was swiftly cornered by RTI officials.

Duma added that three unruly individuals who attempted to interfere with the arrests were also detained.

Arrests recorded in Newcastle over the weekend are as follows:

  • 32 from Friday evening to Saturday morning
  • 36 from Saturday evening to Sunday morning

The MEC commended the strong collaboration between RTI, SAPS, Newcastle Traffic Department, and the Department of Health, thanking all teams for their continued commitment to road safety.
