A total of 234 motorists were arrested in Newcastle this past weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The arrests formed part of the Road Traffic Inspectorate’s (RTI) Alufakwa – Zero Tolerance and No-Nonsense Campaign, conducted from Friday, October 17 to Sunday, October 19.
Siboniso Duma, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, commended the RTI for its ‘highly energised’ team and their efforts in keeping Newcastle’s roads safe.
According to Duma, the first 118 arrests were made on Friday evening. By Sunday morning, a further 116 drivers had been arrested.
“We again wish to warn motorists: drink and drive, and you will earn yourself a criminal record and spend up to 48 hours in a holding cell before bail or your next court appearance,” said Duma.
He added that he was encouraged by the support from ordinary citizens who stood behind the RTI’s efforts to remove irresponsible drivers from the roads.
“These individuals have caused immense suffering to families, leaving widows, orphans, and people living with disabilities as a result of their actions,” Duma said.
He added that statistics show that 12,436 people lost their lives on South African roads in 2022, with over 100,000 seriously injured. Men accounted for 75% of fatalities.
“We have agreed with Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to strengthen multidisciplinary operations throughout Transport Month, into the festive season, and beyond. We must act decisively against those who endanger public safety through excessive alcohol consumption,” said Duma.
The MEC also confirmed that MEC for Health and Safety, Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi, would deploy health professionals to assist with blood testing during operations to ensure successful prosecutions.
“We have agreed to work together to reduce trauma unit admissions caused by alcohol-related injuries,” Duma added.
Additionally, four suspects were arrested for possession of firearms, and eight others were taken into custody for gender-based violence.
“We are overwhelmed by the incredible support shown to our efficient RTI team. The public’s encouragement and our strong partnership with the SAPS will help ensure safety for everyone on our roads,” Duma concluded.
