Schools continue teaching despite ongoing electricity outages

Residents and parents hope the meeting will resolve the issue and electricity will be restored again.

Local schools have continued with normal teaching activities despite ongoing electricity outages affecting some institutions. Electricity was disconnected at several schools on Thursday, allegedly due to an outstanding balance owed to the local municipality by either the Department of Public Works or the Department of Education.

Power outages continue

Power outages have continued, posing challenges to teaching and learning, particularly as schools have just re-opened for the academic term. Educators and learners have had to continue under difficult conditions without electricity, affecting the use of essential resources. Neither the municipality nor the departments of Public Works and Education have said anything about the issue as yet.

Meeting to be held

A member of a School Governing Body (SGB), who requested anonymity, confirmed that a meeting with the municipal manager has been scheduled for tomorrow (January 21). According to the SGB member, the issue is expected to be resolved – electricity to the affected schools is anticipated to be restored immediately after the meeting. Parents and school communities remain hopeful that the matter will be resolved soon to prevent further disruption to the culture of teaching and learning.
