Rorke’s Drift matric star earns seven distinctions

Selulko Masikane shines academically after disciplined study and strong family support.

Eighteen-year-old Selulko Masikane from Rorke’s Drift has shown that discipline, determination and support can lead to exceptional academic success.

Masikane, who attended Shiyane Secondary School, achieved an outstanding seven distinctions in the science stream during the recent matric examinations.

His results include IsiZulu Home Language (90%), English First Additional Language (81%), Mathematics (88%), Life Orientation (93%), Geography (86%), Life Sciences (87%) and Physical Sciences (83%).

Support and strategy key to success

Masikane attributed his achievements to strong family support and a disciplined study approach.

“My family is super supportive and sacrificed a lot for my education. What motivates me most is seeing them proud of me and my achievements,” he said.

He explained that teamwork played an important role during the school year, with learners supporting one another academically.

“At school, I was surrounded by supportive classmates and we formed a study group where we shared ideas and solved problems together,” Masikane said.

As examinations approached, he shifted his focus to independent study, prioritising understanding over memorisation.

“I studied alone, made my own notes based on my understanding, and practised using past examination papers,” he added.

Outside the classroom, Masikane enjoys playing football, which he says helps him stay balanced and focused.

Looking ahead, he hopes to study Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cape Town, a goal he believes his hard work has prepared him for.

He also shared advice for the Class of 2026 and future matric pupils: “Stay focused and do not be afraid to ask for help. It is never too early to start preparing for your final exams.”

With a strong academic foundation and clear goals, Masikane is well placed to pursue his ambitions and inspire other learners in the community.
