The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is running several programmes for crèches and schools across the province, including assessments, skills development, environmental health and safety programmes.
In the uMzinyathi District, the programmes are being rolled out at rural and district schools to promote better healthcare, safety and learning environments.

Representatives from various health sector departments attended workshops on Tuesday and Thursday last week at the Vukuzenzele and Siphutando crèches on Kunene Farm in Sibongile township.
Vukuzenzele was established in 2013 and currently has 64 children between the ages of three months and five years.

The crèche is run by a principal, four teachers and a kitchen staff member.
It also has a playground where the children can play and spend time outdoors.

Health programmes support young learners

The Department of Health’s programmes involve social workers, clinic staff, environmental health officials and skills development officials.
Regular workshops will be held to assist educators and parents with matters relating to children’s health, education and development.

Regular inspections will also be conducted to identify and address potential environmental and safety risks, helping to ensure that children have a safe and healthy environment in which to learn and grow.
