Motorists warned against using R74 Oliviershoek Pass

Sections of the road edge have visibly collapsed.

Safety concerns mount over crumbling R74 Oliviershoek Pass

Motorists have raised serious safety concerns about the deteriorating condition of the R74 Oliviershoek Pass, particularly on the steep descent from Little Switzerland towards Bergville, where sections of the road edge have visibly collapsed.

Drivers using the busy mountain pass report that the route has become increasingly hazardous due to steep gradients, sharp bends and a poor road surface.

Dangerous conditions, especially in wet weather

The situation worsens significantly during rainy and foggy conditions. Motorists say that water pools on the road surface, creating slippery sections, while reduced visibility makes it difficult to anticipate sharp bends and oncoming traffic.

“This road is extremely dangerous, especially when it’s wet. If a truck loses control here, the consequences would be bad,” said one driver who regularly uses the route.

Calls to avoid the route

Road users, especially truck drivers, are strongly advised to avoid the R74 until urgent repairs are carried out. Safer alternative routes between Harrismith and Bergville include the N11, R103 and N3, which are considered more suitable for heavy and long-distance traffic.

With the R74 being a key link between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, road users say immediate action is needed to prevent loss of life and ensure the safety of all who rely on this mountain pass.
