Residents demand action as leaks and sewage plague Hajee Jamaal Street, Dundee

Residents call for urgent repairs as water leaks and sewage spills continue to disrupt life on Hajee Jamaal Street.

Residents of Hajee Jamaal Street say they are growing increasingly frustrated by ongoing water pipe leaks and sewage spills that have persisted since heavy rains in October last year.

A resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said water has been leaking from a pipe outside their property for several months.

The resident said the problem has been reported numerous times to Umzinyathi District Municipality, various municipal departments and the technical team. It is believed the leak is caused by a damaged underground pipe, but no permanent repairs were carried out for an extended period.

Lack of feedback frustrates residents

Residents have also raised concerns about poor communication and a lack of feedback from both the ward councillor and Umzinyathi District Municipality.

They allege that complaints are regularly logged but not followed up on, leaving the community in the dark about when the issue will be resolved.

The ongoing leaks and sewage spills have raised serious health and safety concerns, with residents calling for urgent intervention from the relevant authorities.

It was later learnt that the leak had been repaired, although residents remain sceptical about whether the fix will hold. They have thanked Councillor Gopie, the Courier and others for intervening on their behalf.
