Watch: Honeysucker truck filmed allegedly dumping waste at roadside
The discharge was not directed onto the road surface, but instead onto the grass verge.
A video has been circulating on social media of a honeysucker truck allegedly releasing human waste from its tank onto the grass verge while travelling between Winterton and Ladysmith.
According to the driver of a car who filmed the incident, a strong smell was noticeable well before the truck came into view.
Alleged discharge at the roadside
As the truck was driving along, it was allegedly releasing human waste from its tank. The discharge was not directed onto the road surface, where it would have been more easily visible, but onto the grass verge.
Community reaction
Community member Jennifer Rehman expressed concern and outrage over the incident, saying, “It is very sad to see service delivery vehicles being used in this way. This is totally unacceptable and poses a health hazard.” She added that, given the many service delivery challenges already facing uThukela, the matter should be taken seriously. “Hopefully this matter will be dealt with accordingly. We need staff to be responsible and held accountable for their actions,” Rehman said.
Proper use of honeysucker trucks
Honeysucker trucks are used by municipalities to empty septic tanks and pit latrines. The waste that is collected by these trucks is required to be disposed of at designated wastewater treatment facilities.
