It was an intense and memorable rugby afternoon when Vryheid Rugby Club hosted Piet Retief Rugby Club, with both teams ready for a physical battle. From the opening whistle, Piet Retief brought serious intensity to the field, putting pressure on the Vryheid side and setting the tone for a tough contest.

Early lead and lightning delay

Vryheid Rugby Club managed to break the deadlock early in the first half, crossing the try line to take a 5–0 lead. The match, however, was soon interrupted when lightning in the area forced the referee to stop play for safety reasons. Players and supporters waited patiently on the side-lines as the storm passed.

After approximately 15 minutes, the referee returned and unfortunately announced that the first half would be stopped early and the teams would go straight into halftime.

Coach calls for composure

Despite the unusual interruption, Coach MJ had his team well prepared for the challenge against a determined Piet Retief side. His message at halftime focused on composure, discipline, and finishing opportunities when they came.

Second-half momentum shift

When the second half kicked off, Vryheid Rugby Club came out with renewed energy and determination. The home side quickly shifted momentum and scored two excellent tries, both successfully converted by Chris van Rooyen, extending the lead and putting real pressure on the visitors.

Piet Retief Rugby Club continued to fight hard and showed great determination throughout the match, but the Vryheid defence held strong, refusing to allow any points. The home team’s defensive effort, combined with disciplined attacking play, ensured that Vryheid Rugby Club secured a well-earned victory.
