Dominant second half secures Vryheid victory
Vryheid Rugby Club rallies to defeat Ladysmith 36-17.
Kick-off at 18:30 set the stage for an intense showdown as Vryheid Rugby Club secured a hard-fought 36-17 victory over Ladysmith in a match that tested character, composure and resilience on Friday evening.
Slow start under pressure
The opening 20 minutes of the first half proved challenging for the home side. Ladysmith came out firing, putting Vryheid under immediate pressure. The boys looked a bit shaky early on, struggling to find rhythm and momentum. Physicality dominated the exchanges, with heavy knocks and tough collisions setting the tone for a bruising first half.
Despite the early nerves and constant pressure, Vryheid showed determination. As each minute passed, the team began to settle and build phases of structured play. It was not a perfect first half by any stretch of the imagination, but grit and persistence kept them in the contest as they headed into half-time with the score at 10-5.
Powerful half-time reset
At the break, Coach MJ Swanepoel delivered a powerful and focused team talk, re-igniting belief and reminding the players of the pride that comes with wearing the Vryheid jersey. The message was clear: Lift the intensity, trust the structure, and play for each other.
Dominant second-half performance
The second half saw a transformed Vryheid side. With renewed energy and sharper execution, the boys began to take control. The attacking lines improved, support play became more effective, and confidence grew with every phase. Magic moments followed as Vryheid started playing with pride and purpose.
Franco Jonker delivered a stand-out performance, crossing the line twice to earn ‘Man of the Match’ honours. Chris van Rooyen added to the scoreboard with a try and slotted two conversions, keeping the pressure firmly on Ladysmith. More tries from Etiaan Latlief, Klopper Opperman and Ndumiso Gcaba sealed the result and showcased the squad’s depth.
Work still to be done
While the 36-17 final score reflects a convincing win, the coaching staff remains realistic about the performance. There are still areas that need improvement, with several players showing signs of shakiness and aspects of the game requiring refinement. As a club, Vryheid acknowledges that there is work to be done and imperfections to correct moving forward.
Nevertheless, the result highlights the team’s fighting spirit and growing cohesion. A tough first half, a motivating half-time reset, and a dominant second-half display ensured that Vryheid Rugby Club walked away deserved winners on the night.
