Padel league hosts first player auction in Newcastle

Each team captain received a budget of R20 000 in virtual funds, which they used to bid for players.

Wednesday evening, April 22, marked the first-ever player auction hosted by the Newcastle Padel League.

Around 50 enthusiastic players, along with six team captains, gathered at Prime Padel on Kirkland Street to see who would be selected for the league teams.

Unique format promotes fairness

The auction followed a simple format. Each team captain received a budget of R20 000 in virtual funds, which they used to bid for players they believed would strengthen their squads.

Event organiser Irfaan Khan said the initiative aimed to give all players a fair chance of selection while promoting greater diversity within teams.

“This approach gives players the opportunity to improve their game while helping to grow the sport locally,” he said.

Opportunities for all players

Players who were not selected will still have an opportunity to compete. They will take part in a silver league, where they can continue developing their skills and improve their chances of being chosen for future league teams.

Khan also thanked the main sponsors for their continued support, as well as the players for their commitment and enthusiasm.
