A man was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning, May 19, after being found on the roof of a business in the Newcastle CBD.

According to Mornè Potgieter of Ithemba Security Services, armed response officers were dispatched to the premises after an alarm went off.

Officers hear suspicious noises

“Upon arrival, one of our officers heard suspicious noises coming from the roof of the premises. Further investigation led to the discovery of two suspects stripping air-conditioning units on the roof,” said Potgieter.

Backup response units were immediately called upon to assist and secure the surrounding area.

Suspect caught after chase

Potgieter said the alleged thieves attempted to flee the scene and officers chased them on foot.

One suspect was successfully apprehended and handed over to police, while the other escaped.

“Well done to our dedicated and alert response officers for their quick reaction, teamwork and commitment to protecting our clients and community,” concluded Potgieter.
