Starry Night offers stargazing for a good cause

Residents can enjoy stargazing and support conservation at the Starry Night fundraiser.

Residents are invited to experience the beauty of Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve in a unique way while helping to protect one of the town’s most treasured natural assets.

The upcoming Starry Night fundraiser, taking place on Saturday, June 13, promises an unforgettable evening under the stars, with all proceeds contributing towards the upkeep and maintenance of the Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve. The conservation work is carried out by the dedicated local Honorary Officers of Ezemvelo, who volunteer their time and effort to preserve the reserve for future generations.

Evening begins with astronomy talk

The evening will begin at the Moth Hall at 16:30, where guests will enjoy a short astronomy talk before making their way up the hill for a guided night-sky experience.

Visitors will have the opportunity to relax beneath the stars, take in breathtaking views over Vryheid, and learn more about the wonders of the night sky through telescope viewing hosted by astronomy enthusiast Angus Burns.

Picnic baskets available

For those wanting to make an evening of it, picnic baskets are available at R150 per person. Guests who purchase a picnic basket will receive free entry to the reserve, making it an attractive option for families, couples and groups of friends looking for a memorable winter outing.

Supporting the future of Vryheid Hill

Funds raised through the event will directly support the ongoing conservation efforts at Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve. The reserve remains an important recreational and environmental asset for the community, and maintaining its trails, infrastructure and natural habitats requires continuous attention and resources.

Community encouraged to get involved

Organisers encourage residents to secure their bookings early and support the volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the reserve remains a safe and beautiful space for everyone to enjoy.

Those interested in attending or ordering picnic baskets can contact Uncle John McKenzie on 083 459 3605 for bookings.

Perfect conditions for stargazing

With crisp winter skies expected to provide excellent viewing conditions, organisers say Starry Night offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy an evening outdoors while investing in the future of one of Vryheid’s most cherished landmarks. Guests are advised to bring a blanket and a chair to stay warm and comfortable throughout the evening.
