Young woman pursuing auctioneering career despite challenges

Vryheid's Sithandiwe Mhlongo seeks support to complete her auctioneering qualification.

At just 23 years old, Sithandiwe Mhlongo is determined to build a career in the auctioneering industry, a field traditionally dominated by men.

A journey from Vryheid to professional aspirations

Born in Vryheid, Cliffdale area, Mhlongo attended Bhekuzulu Primary School before continuing her education at Besterspruit and later completing her matric at Gelekedle High School.

Today, she holds a Services SETA qualification in Auctioneering Support Services (SAQA ID 80546) and is seeking opportunities to complete the requirements for her Occupational Certificate.

Mhlongo said auctioneering was not part of her original career plans.

“When I was younger, I aspired to become a pilot or an actress. I never imagined that I would end up in auctioneering, because it is a male-dominated industry. However, I have grown to love the profession and my passion for it continues to grow.”

Overcoming personal and academic obstacles

As the eldest daughter in her family, Mhlongo describes herself as free-spirited and ambitious. However, her high school years were marked by challenges that affected her confidence and academic performance.

“My high school experience was bittersweet. I was bullied because of a skin condition and it affected both my confidence and my school work. My marks dropped and my teachers eventually contacted my family to intervene.”

Despite the difficulties, Mhlongo completed matric and moved to Durban in pursuit of further education.

Financial setbacks and a new direction

She was accepted to study at the Durban University of Technology, but financial constraints prevented her from enrolling. During this period, she explored opportunities in the entertainment industry and worked as an extra on several television productions.

In 2023, Mhlongo secured a learnership in Auctioneering Support Services, which opened the door to a new career path.

She completed the theoretical component of her training through Cleverland Technical and Business College while gaining practical experience with auction companies.

Seeking opportunities to complete qualification

Having successfully completed the qualification, she is now working towards obtaining her Occupational Certificate.

“I have applied to several institutions for Recognition of Prior Learning assessments, but many have not responded. Some private academies offer the training, but the costs are beyond my reach. I am not asking for charity. I am asking for an opportunity to qualify and contribute to my community.”

Mhlongo can be contacted on 066 448 4582 or sthandiwemhlongo341@gmail.com.
