Deputy Minister leads cross-border road safety drive
Deputy Minister visits Golela Border Post to promote cross-border road safety and compliance.
The Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr Mkhuleko Hlengwa, is expected to visit the Golela Border Post near Pongola on Friday (June 26), as part of a road safety campaign aimed at improving cross-border transport operations.
Road safety and border operations in focus
During the visit, the Deputy Minister will join the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (C-BRTA) to assess operations at the border post and promote the safe movement of people and goods between South Africa and the Kingdom of Eswatini.
According to the Department of Transport, the campaign forms part of the Cross-Alive Road Safety Campaign, which focuses on improving road safety along major transport corridors linking South Africa with neighbouring countries, including Eswatini, Lesotho and Mozambique.
Enforcement and compliance take priority
A key priority of the campaign is the safe transportation of hazardous goods, while authorities will also monitor cross-border traffic and enforce compliance with road transport legislation.
Law enforcement officials will use the campaign to identify operators who are contravening cross-border transport laws and to curb illegal cross-border transport activities. The initiative also aims to encourage safer driving behaviour along these busy transport routes.
Regional cooperation strengthens preparedness
In preparation for the campaign, the C-BRTA, together with the National Department of Transport and the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), hosted a two-day Road Incident Management Systems (RIMS) and dangerous goods training programme from June 22 to 23.
The training brought together first responders and emergency services, including fire departments, traffic police, the South African Police Service and other authorities from KwaZulu-Natal and the Pongola area, including the eTheza Traffic Control Centre. Officials from Eswatini and Lesotho also participated in the training to strengthen regional cooperation and improve road safety across shared transport corridors.
Joint operation planned at Golela
Friday’s programme will include a walkabout at the Golela Border Post, followed by a joint law enforcement operation and road safety campaign.
The visit is scheduled to begin at 10:00.
